A renovated exchange gearbox is a reconditioned box which you can buy when you trade in your old gearbox.
We operate an exchange system in order to be able to deliver a renovated gearbox to you before you return your old one.
The overall cost of replacing a gearbox consists of the labour cost for fitting it, the cost of purchasing and shipping it, and the transmission oil (a significant cost for automatic boxes).
Renovating entails internal cleaning, changing worn parts, and inspecting other parts. Parts not found to be up to scratch during inspection are replaced.
A renovated gearbox can be regarded as "almost new". Carmakers themselves are switching to selling renovated exchange boxes (which are sometimes sloppily called "new") when their models are a few years old. That’s why you should check what they’re really selling when you get a price quote.
A repair entails the mechanic localizing a fault in the gearbox and rectifying that specific fault – and only that specific fault.
Repairs are mainly of interest if they can be carried out with the gearbox still in situ. If the box needs to be removed from the car, the price difference between repairing and renovating it will be comparatively small. In that case, many people will choose to renovate the entire gearbox.
One difficulty associated with repairs (of specific faults) is managing the warranty. The mechanic guarantees his work but often the gearbox may have other faults which also affect how it works.
