Renovated exchange boxes

A renovated exchange gearbox is a reconditioned box which you can buy when you trade in your old gearbox.

Exchange system – advantage for you

We operate an exchange system in order to be able to deliver a renovated gearbox to you before you return your old one.

  • You’ll be able to replace the gearbox in one work session because the renovated box will be available for fitting as the old one is removed from the car.

  • The exchange system means lower prices because you’re trading in your old box. Please note that all our gearbox prices are based on your old box being sent to us as a trade-in.
  • Fixed prices. You know in advance what the gearbox will cost, thus avoiding unpleasant surprises.

Renovated gearboxes compared with used ones

The overall cost of replacing a gearbox consists of the labour cost for fitting it, the cost of purchasing and shipping it, and the transmission oil (a significant cost for automatic boxes).

  • You run the risk of double labour costs
  • . Labour costs make up a rather large proportion of the overall cost. If a used gearbox is incorrectly marked or quality rated (sold as working but actually defective), it will have to be removed from the car again and sent back, thus incurring additional costs.
  • How long will a used gearbox last? Certain types of boxes last longer than others, but it is primarily the previous owners’ driving and servicing habits which determine the service life of a gearbox. How can you check that in a used gearbox?

What does renovating a gearbox entail?

Renovating entails internal cleaning, changing worn parts, and inspecting other parts. Parts not found to be up to scratch during inspection are replaced.

A renovated gearbox can be regarded as "almost new". Carmakers themselves are switching to selling renovated exchange boxes (which are sometimes sloppily called "new") when their models are a few years old. That’s why you should check what they’re really selling when you get a price quote.

Difference between repair and renovation?

A repair entails the mechanic localizing a fault in the gearbox and rectifying that specific fault – and only that specific fault.

Repairs are mainly of interest if they can be carried out with the gearbox still in situ. If the box needs to be removed from the car, the price difference between repairing and renovating it will be comparatively small. In that case, many people will choose to renovate the entire gearbox.

One difficulty associated with repairs (of specific faults) is managing the warranty. The mechanic guarantees his work but often the gearbox may have other faults which also affect how it works.
