Solve your box problems

Changing a gearbox is an expensive business. Make sure, therefore, that the apparent problems are really due to a faulty gearbox. The most common practice is that fault localization is carried out by a normal repair shop, but we have listed below some points that are worth checking.
 

Automatic boxes

Check and if necessary adjust the oil level in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions (the engine must always be running). An automatic box which has run dry will often have burnt discs.

If an automatic box contains burnt oil or if the oil contains water/metal shavings, it will have to be replaced. 
• Oil servicing / flushing (changing the oil and filter) can eliminate some faults. Bear in mind that a clean-up (like oil servicing and flushing) can cause some faults to become more pronounced (e.g. cracks in gaskets). It is relatively common for repair shops to be falsely accused of incompetence when the gearbox becomes worse following an oil service.

If the oil in a gearbox contains metal shavings, the box will have to be replaced.

Make sure that the oil level is right. Use oil in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions. If the level is wrong, adjust it and check whether this has any affect. 
• Upgrade the quality of the oil to see if the problem is related to poor lubrication. Add Lubegard Gear Fluid Supplement to the old oil.
